This is one of three prototypes built by Alvarez and K.Yairi for Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir.

This model never went into production but its closest relative is the WY-1 Bob Weir signature model.

I was living in South Africa at the time, and got it from Ray Phiri one of South Africas top JazzFusion guitarists who is famous world wide for his fantastic guitar playing all over Paul Simons Graceland Album.

Ray got the guitar in New York from Ted Kornblum who was the Alvarez artist representative at the time and he used it for a gig in New York with Paul Simon and Annie Lennox.

I got it from Ray after this and used it exclusively on two very successful albums I recorded as an artist in South Africa.

The guitar features on the covers of both albums.

I am now living in the United Kingdom.

Both Alvarez and K.Yairi had records of the serial number of the guitars body and Modulus were able to trace the serial number as well.

What I have discovered via email conversations is that three Modulus graphite necks were initially built for the first prototypes of what were to became the Bob Weir WY-1 (with its unique small body based on the Martin 000) and the Jerry Garcia DY99 with it jumbo style body and unique Tree Of Life in lay.

The inlays on these originals were hand carved by a luthier in Vermont according to what I have found out from Modulus directly.

Strangely there is conflict here as a more plausible explanation is given in the email from Alvarez and K.Yairi (see photo above) and seems to me to be the real explanation.

The photo included above of Bob and Jerry with their individual Modulus equipped guitars are to the best of my knowledge the other two of the three original prototypes that were built.

There is also an interesting article I have included as a photo above which mentions Ted Kornblum and Bob Weir and the very early discussion about the design of this exact guitar.

It is also the only one ever built from Lacewood which gives it a stunning look.

I have included as much supporting documentation as I possibly can.

He told me that Jerry specifically mentioned that he found the width of the neck at the nut a little too narrow for his liking I can only assume then that Bob has smaller hands than Jerry as according to Modulus only one mould was made for the original prototype guitar necks.

Perhaps this sized neck went on to be the Bob Weir models and a wider neck was developed for the DY99 Im not sure.

The guitar has an LR Baggs Micro Duet pick-upMic system fitted which sound wonderful and is supplied with a new Hiscox hard case designed specifically for this guitar.

The original hard case (which had a great stenciled graphic of Chikapa Ray Phiris home address on it) eventually wore out as it was of standard construction with hinges that were not particularly strong.The body is Lacewood and I believe the top is Solid Spruce.

The neck is a Modulus Graphite carbon graphite neck with a rosewood fingerboard.

However, I have recently had a clear out of instruments to raise funds to expand my home studio.

This guitar is only played rarely by myself because I have big hands I am bass player mostly and I too find the neck width quite narrow.

I mainly use it for capoed up parts so i can take advantage of the wider next spacing higher up the neck.

I also feel very strongly that this sort of guitar should be owned by someone for whom it has real meaning as its that kind of instrument and needs a caring home I payed a lot for this guitar back in the day and I do believe it is a very valuable guitar even with out its direct connection to the Grateful Dead and hence I am starting the auction at what I believe it is worth.

It is virtually impossible to value an instrument like this as it is so unique a true one off.
